Parents and family members play a critical role guiding their child during the four years of high school. As your child enters high school they are faced with many opportunities that are exciting and rewarding.  This is a time in which parents can help their children prepare for a future career. Combining both academics and career classes will help your child stay focused in school. It may provide them with career choices that may help them be more successful than those students who lack a sense of direction

Today's high school students are taking more academic courses than ever, yet many lack the skills they need for college and career training. Business and industry members are stating that many students cannot properly read technical materials or apply mathematics to simple, common real-world problems or work projects.  ROP courses help improve student's  academic skills to meet today's complex and technology-based economy.  See the many reasons why your child should be enrolled in an ROP class

Research has demonstrated the value of career technical education courses for students and the economy.  CTE helps produce gains in academic achievement and future earnings for students.  This represents a significant contribution to the education of America's youth in preparation of a skilled workforce.

  • Students at schools with highly integrated rigorous academic and CTE programs have significantly higher student achievement in reading, mathematics and science than do students at schools with less integrated programs.
  • CTE graduates are 10-15% more likely to be in the labor force, and earn 8-9% more than graduates of academic programs, according to a 2001 Russell Sage Foundation study.
  • Secondary students who graduate with a career and technical education concentration are 2 ½ times more likely to be employed while pursuing postsecondary education than are "college prep" students, according to the Southern Regional Education Board. "Linking Career/Technical Studies to Broader High School Reform
  • A ratio of 1 CTE class for every 2 academic classes was shown to minimize the risk of students dropping out in a 2005 National Research Center for Career and Technical Education (NRCCTE) report.
  • In a Gates Foundation report, 81 percent of students who dropped out said that "more real world learning" may have influenced them to stay in school.

A study completed by UC Riverside in 2006 cited the benefits for students who enroll in ROP courses at the high-school level with peers who did not enroll in an ROP course.  Major findings of the study included:

  • ROP students improve their high school grade-point averages at a greater rate
  • ROP students enroll in post-secondary education in large numbers
  • ROP students earn higher wages
  • ROP students have more success in securing raises and promotions on-the-job

Your student will learn from an instructor who has industry experience in the technical subject matter and will prepare your child to be successful in the work-place.  Students enrolled in ROP classes will gain technical knowledge and skills based on the career technical standards from the California Department of Education. ROP teachers are CREDENTIALED NSTRUCTORS that possess either a Designated Subjects Vocational Education credential or Career Technical Education credentialed by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

  • ROP instructors provide hands-on learning projects that make learning exciting.   All courses offered are approved by the La Puente Valley ROP Joint Board of Trustees and certified by the California Department of Education and accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges.
  • Courses are competency-based, and where applicable, prepare students for state or national certification examinations. Click here for the course catalog.
  • Upon successful completion of the ROP course, students will receive a certificate which is recognized by industry employers.

La Puente Valley ROP has an agreement with Bassett USD, Hacienda La Puente USD and Rowland USD, to provide career technical education courses to their students.  Students who successfully complete ROP classes will earn five to ten elective credits from their high school.  In addition, La Puente Valley ROP has articulation agreements with Mount San Antonio and Rio Hondo Community Colleges to provide college-level credit or advanced placement for ROP students. The articulation agreements provide students who have successfully completed an ROP course or program to enroll in advanced courses or receive credit at the community college level. Advanced placement or credit may vary depending upon the course.   Click here for list of articulated courses.
