| | In an effort to alleviate any challenges related to Cosmetology, La Puente Valley ROP has streamlined the procedure for students interested in participating in the Cosmetology program. La Puente Valley ROP Guidance Specialists will disseminate information on orientation dates to Counselors, Students, Parents and Administration. The next orientation is scheduled for August 25, 5 pm at the Ed Center. Orientations will also occur on January 12 and May 19, 2009; all begin at 5 pm. Students are required to attend the orientation with a parent or guardian. The orientation will be held at the La Puente Valley ROP Education Center and will include information and process forms for transportation and enrollment. Attendance at the orientation does not guarantee admission into the program. Counselors will receive a list of students eligible to register via the ROP Guidance Specialists. Students will be taken on a first-come, first served basis with a list maintained at the Education Center, based on districts. For example—if three students attend the orientation from the three districts, each will go on their own district list. The lists will be rotated, so that Rowland, Bassett and HLP each have one candidate; this will follow on to ensure equity of representation in the program by the three districts. If there are any problems, concerns or questions, Debra Mustain, Director of Student Services will be the contact person for all resolutions related to registration and forms. Any curriculum or site questions should be continued to be addressed to David Vedder, Program Manager. Guidance Specialists are responsible to provide information only, and will not disseminate registration materials; all registration and transportation forms will be handled at the LPVROP Ed Center. | |

ROP courses are offered based on a number of factors, including: Local labor market needs Projected future labor market Student interest Availability of facilities and appropriately-credentialed instructors School site needs Evidence of a sequence or pathway for the course Potential for industry certification or direct employment Please review the information on “How an ROP Class is Born” in this resource guide for additional information. Where do you get your instructors? Many ROP instructors take the “traditional” education route and possess a degree and credential from a university program. Other ROP instructors obtain a designated-subject credential, which requires a series of education courses coupled with five years of industry-based experience in the credential area. All ROP instructors are provided support at the site level with an Instructional Supervisor assigned to each district. ROP provides additional training and support through in-service programs, conference attendance, observations and availability of resources to ensure instructor success. ROP Instructors are working with state-adopted course outlines and standards. Curriculum is reviewed annually by local business and industry personnel. Questions about instructor credentialing or instruction may be directed to the Instructional Supervisor assigned to the district, or to Donna Schwan, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. How is ROP curriculum developed? ROP Curriculum is developed through input from a variety of stakeholders, including instructors and business and industry input. In 2005, the State of California adopted the Career and Technical Education Standards, which are currently being infused into all existing curriculum. The standards were developed with extensive input and educational research. ROP Instructors are actively learning and using the new standards and accompanying state framework, which allows them to develop standards-based lesson plans and assessments. All of the course foundation standards were selected to support student achievement on the CAHSEE and other standardized tests. Why should I send a student to take an ROP course? There are many important reasons why all students should have information and access to ROP programs. ROP programs across California have shown evidence of increasing student achievement and success in the workplace in comparison with peer groups. Students who are not sure of their future career options can benefit by taking an ROP class as part of their career exploration. Students who may need to while attending college can benefit by developing job skills that will provide them a start in the direction of generating income while attending school. Students who are intent on a career with a related ROP program will definitely benefit by taking the first step on their career path while in high school. Students who need to take additional courses beyond the school day are also able to work toward achievement of additional elective credits (based on district requirements) through successful completion of an ROP course. The bottom line is that EVERY student can benefit from learning skills related to being employed and keeping a job, including writing a resume, completing a job application, participating in a job interview, and learning how to research and gather information about education and career options beyond high school. ROP provides many important opportunities for learning that will assist students in being successful beyond high school in work and educational endeavors. What about articulation agreements and industry certifications? There are several courses that have articulation agreements with Mt. San Antonio Community College and/or RioHondoCommunity College. Industry certifications include the Microsoft Office User Specialist certification. Information on industry-based certifications can be obtained by contacting the ROP Instructor or Donna Schwan, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services at (626) 810-3300. We continue to actively develop and implement ROP courses to provide students training leading to industry certification. | |
