Student Internships

Business and industry partners play an important role in leading and defining career technical education for high school students. The best way to get highly qualified workers to meet the skills and qualifications for a changing workforce environment is to be directly involved with today's youth by providing direct input into curriculum and assessments of skills being taught in the classroom. Business and industry partners help bridge the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The best way you can contribute to the future is by becoming an internship site. Next steps to becoming an internship partner

  1. Meet formally with the ROP instructor or ROP Educational Services to determine interests, resources and match. The first meeting usually consists of a brief orientation of the ROP class and meeting the key players. No commitment is required at this time, however, many times both the partner and instructor feel ready to begin the internship process.
  2. OPTIONAL - Hold a second meeting between instructor and/or ROP Educational Services to determine whether there is a common ground for the partnership. If necessary, a second meeting may be scheduled to answer any questions and clarify the internship process and expectations.
  3. Next step involves signing of the community classroom agreement. The business partner, instructor and ROP administrator sign an agreement confirming that the business has a suitable training environment; that ROP student(s) will not displace or reduce the number of work hours for a paid employee nor preclude the firing of new paid employees; that and the training provides a work place learning experience consistent with the purpose of the ROP and its course outline.

Employer Expectations

The business is to provide students with job/work experience, thus making the student employable. The business is NOT allowed to pay the student while in training unless a special Cooperative Vocational Education Training Agreement is in place. The business is not obligated to hire the individual at the end of the training program but is encouraged to do so if individual meets the employer's criteria and there is a job opening. Please refer to the Community classroom training agreement for additional information.

ROP Expectations

The student is under the supervision of a La Puente Valley ROP employee who possesses a valid teaching credential and meets the requirements of the California State Plan for Vocational Education. This certificated instructor is responsible for directing and monitoring the learning progress of the student and for a written training plan with specific performance objectives describing the competencies the student will be expected to learn.
La Puente Valley ROP will provide proof of liability insurance. The student participating in work place learning is considered an employee of their home school district for purposes of providing workers' compensation insurance.
